WORKSHOP THREE

Volunteers - the resource you can’t afford to ignore!

  • Tony Edwards, Director of Trading & Enterprise, Volunteering England

How many volunteers does your organisation have? Is this valuable resource being managed properly and being utilised to its full potential? Statistics show that 19.9 million people volunteer at least once a year in England contributing 1.9 billion hours annually which is worth an estimated value of £23.4 billion full time work hours (figures taken from DCLG Citizenship Survey).

Volunteering is currently high on the Government’s agenda – helping both the public sector and charities deliver a wide range of services. The recent Commission on the Future of Volunteering’s report and recommendations further shows the need for the Voluntary & Community sector to fully utilise the skills and potential of the millions of volunteers who give their time freely.

This practical session will explore the main issues around volunteer management and discuss a range of solutions to ensure your organisation is maximising its volunteer potential. Areas covered:

  • Valuing your Volunteers in a way that’s both practical and effective
  • The crucial role of Volunteer Manager / Co-ordinator
  • Ensuring Quality Assurance within your volunteer programmes
  • Measuring the impact of your volunteer supported services
  • Keeping informed about the world of volunteering and opportunities to enhance your support to volunteers
  • How Volunteering England can support your organisation in the development of volunteers and their impact in the delivery your vision

WORKSHOP FOUR

Recruiting and developing young trustees – experience vs. enthusiasm?

  • John Schless, Not-for-Profit Consultant, Rockpools and Trustee, Get Connected
  • Lesley Dixon, Chief Executive, Leeds University Union

This session is designed to talk through some of the ways of attracting and engaging young trustees to your board and getting the right balance between experience and enthusiasm.

It will examine some of the barriers and pitfalls and set out ways in which young trustees can be engaged and utilized through appropriate models of recruitment, induction and training.

WORKSHOP FIVE

Outcome focused planning: an integrated approach to achieving and demonstrating impact

  • David Saint, Action Planning

This practical and interactive session will explain how to use outcome-focused planning in your organisation.

It will examine how to engage stakeholders, use market information and positioning tactics, and build in from the beginning the integrated systems and structures needed to deliver results and demonstrate impact.

WORKSHOP SIX

How many pages are devoted to fundraising in your strategic plan?

  • Andrew Thomas, Chief Executive, Charity Consultants Ltd and the provider of acevo’s Fundraising Helpline

The workshop will look at the key strategic elements of thinking strategically about fundraising for revenue and capital projects. It will also explore the questions your Finance Director should be asking, involving trustees as fundraising leaders and give an overview of which types of fundraising are the most cost effective and are the most predictable.

Participants will receive a free copy of acevo’s Essential Guide to Fundraising for Chief Executives.

WORKSHOP SEVEN

Delivering services for the public sector

  • Mike Whitlam, Specialist Charity Sector Advisor, Russam GMS

Whilst the government commissioning brings fresh opportunities, it also means new pressures for leaders in third sector organisations.
