Micro volunteering comes to Spain

30th May 2008, 4:39 pm

A Spanish foundation which supports volunteering through technology, Bip-Bip, has created a volunteer-matching web site with a difference - the most commitment it will ever ask for is 2 hours. While probably not unique (is there such a scheme in the US?), http://www.microvoluntarios.org is perhaps the first successful micro-volunteering site in Europe.

Volunteers can commit just a few minutes for microtasks such as translations, graphic design, internet support and editing. From Vita Europe (http://web.vita.it/vitaeurope/art.php?art=93867, registration required).

I run a small IT services companies with offices in Oxford and London, and have been wondering whether we could use spare capacity on a voluntary basis to charities.

The issue that I face is that in general our spare time is available in small slices at short notice. Consequently www.microvoluntarios.org sounds great. Sadly wrong country. Does anyone know of a similar scheme in the UK?

Although we provide Sage support too, our spare capacity is typically network support (Microsoft and Cisco support but with a fuller list of products here.)
