What is VoluntaryNews?

VoluntaryNews carries relevant and practical news of interest to those involved with voluntary and community organisations in the UK.

  • Many of the news items on this site appear first in our weekly email newsletter - get the latest delivered straight to your inbox!
  • Wider News carries news items from voluntary groups, charities etc. For more frontline updates, see the links to other sites on our News from the Sector page.

RSS (news) feeds can deliver news direct to your computer as soon as it is published, once you’ve got hold of a news reader program (there’s one built-in to the Firefox browser). Ours are available, in RSS version 2 by default, for the latest news or by issue, location or the main news groups (see More News for the latter). Atom and other RSS versions are also on tap. Note: the calendar feed is a little different, RSS v 0.92, and may not work for everybody.

If you want to use a feed on another website, please include a reference to VoluntaryNews and a link back, and let us know.

We check material as best we can, but there are often constraints to this, and we encourage active checking where appropriate.

For communication advice and other ways of getting the message across, see the VolResource Dealing with the Media page.

Who

VoluntaryNews is one of a number of web sites run by VolResource:

  • The main VolResource site includes briefings on everything to do with running a voluntary organisation, links to further resources, listings of specialist services and software, a glossary, and much more information. Find out more about VolResource.
  • CharityBlog is where you can find more personal and less immediately practical news, views and thoughts. This has now taken on the role of Open Charity Blog too - if you’ve got something to say on the voluntary sector which isn’t exactly news, such as opinion pieces, suggestions or requests, say it here.

We try to ensure that our sites meet high accessibility standards. Do let us know if you come across any problems.

Contact us via the VolResource response form. Items for the newsletter, rather than this site, can be sent using the email address given there.

Adding your News or Events

See your organisation’s news releases, event notices etc. on these pages. Benefit from our recognised name, built-in news feeds (RSS/Atom) and automatic ‘ping’ facility to wake up the sites which collect and pass on news (Google, Technorati etc.).

We’ve removed the online registration due to the high number of spam sign-ups. So please use the Response Form to ask for a user name and password.

Login and go to the Write section on the admin site - it’s easier than it looks! You will be able to publish to the Wider News section. We may be able to arrange publishing to other categories on request. If you want to promote an Event, see the main Events page for more info.

Before you post, please check Admin information for updates, the usual disclaimers and terms and conditions. Please see the Events section for more on using the listings diary.

Logging in problems?

Most people won’t have any problems logging in, but there are a number of things which can stop you logging in:

  • Note that username and password are case sensitive - if you registered using a capital letter (e.g. Fred), type it that way!
  • Cookies must be enabled.
  • Web browser software (Internet Explorer, Opera etc) often keep visited pages ‘cached’. You may need to clear this cache for corrections to work (especially after enabling cookies we find).
  • When using Opera (v9) we’ve found some quirks. It tends to take you back to the log-in page, even though you are logged in. You can go to the site front page and click on Site Admin, bottom right.
